How to Use the TR4 Series

TR4 Series Data Loggers

In this Help, the TR4 Series Data Loggers are also referred to as simply the "device", "unit", "data logger" or "logger".

Installing / Replacing the Battery

Recording will begin upon insertion of the battery.
The factory default settings are as follows: Recording Interval at 10 minutes, Recording Mode at Endless.

  1. Remove the screws and open the cover. (Phillips head #1 screwdriver is recommended.)

  2. Insert the included battery. Do not remove the battery from its tube casing.

  3. Close the cover. (Appropriate Tightening Torque: 20N・cm to 30N・cm (2Kgf・cm to 3Kgf・cm))
For TR41 and TR42: Before closing the battery cover, check the rubber packing inside the cover, and remove the dust or replace the packing if it is damaged.

After inserting the battery for the first time, nothing may appear or occur for about 10 seconds; this is not a malfunction.

Notes about Changing the Battery

  • When replacing a battery, please make sure to download any necessary data from the logger beforehand.
  • Leaving the device without a battery until the LCD display goes blank will cause all recorded data in the device to be lost. (Device settings such as the device name and recording interval will not be lost.)
  • Make sure that + and − are in the correct direction.
  • While the battery is removed, communication with a smartphone/tablet is not possible.
  • If a new battery has been installed and nothing appears in the display, please remove and reinsert the battery.
  • When inserting a battery, make sure no water or foreign objects get inside the case.
  • Be sure to completely close the cover.

Estimated Battery Life

  Battery Life Conditions
Rec Interval Graph View
TR41 / 42 About 1 month 1 sec constantly
About 1 year 1 sec less than 3 min a day
About 1 year 10 sec or more less than 1 hour a day
About 1 year and 6 months 10 sec or more less than 3 min a day
TR45 About 1 month 1 sec constantly
About 6 months 1 sec less than 3 min a day
About 6 months 10 sec or more less than 1 hour day
About 1 year 10 sec or more less than 3 min a day
  • battery warning mark () may appear sooner than noted above.
  • Battery life will be shortened when: downloading data very often, setting the recording interval at less than 10 seconds, or measuring in high/low environment.

Battery Life in High/Low Temperature Environmen

−20°C: one half of life compared to normal temperatures
−30°C: one third of life compared to normal temperatures
60°C: one half of life compared to normal temperatures

  • Even if in room temperature environments the battery warning mark () may not appear, it may not be possible to carry out communication at low temperatures.
  • In environments of 60°C or higher, not only will battery life be shortened but the unit itself and its parts will deteriorate more rapidly. Please do not use in such environments for prolonged periods of time.

Connecting the Sensor

TR42: Thermistor Temperature Sensor

Connect the supplied sensor to the sensor jack on the logger. Upon recognizing a sensor, the LCD will display the measurement.

TR45: Thermocouple Sensor

Follow the steps below.

  1. Check the sensor type and the polarity (plus and minus signs).

  2. Loosen the screws and insert terminals plus and minus according to the diagram shown on the terminal block.

  3. Firmly tighten the screws to the terminal block. (Maximum torque: 30N・cm)
Use the supplied cable clamp to protect wire.

  4. Make Sensor Settings in the App. (See TR45 Sensor Settings.)

TR45: Pt Sensor

Follow the steps below.

  1. Loosen the screws and insert terminals A and B according to the diagram shown on the terminal block.
In the case of a 4-wire sensor, one wire will be left unused.

  2. Firmly tighten the screws to the terminal block. (Maximum torque: 30N・cm)
Use the supplied cable clamp to protect wire.

  3. Make Sensor Settings in the App. (See TR45 Sensor Settings.)

TR45 Sensor Settings

Make sensor settings in the ThermoREC App when connecting the sensor to the TR45 for the first time or when changing the sensor type.

  1. In the Top screen of ThermoREC, tap Operations menu () for the target device and select [Make Settings].

  2. Tap on the [Recording Settings] cell.

  3. Tap [Sensor Settings], and select the sensor type.

Reading the LCD Display

Marks on LCD Screen

The following explanations concern those sections outlined in red.

Recording Status

ON: Recording in progress
OFF: Recording stopped
BLINKING: Waiting for programmed start

Recording Mode

ON (One Time): Recording automatically stops when logging capacity is full, and the measurement and the [FULL] sign will alternately appear in the LCD.
OFF (Endless): Upon reaching the logging capacity, the oldest data is overwritten and recording continues.

  • The factory default setting is Endless.

Battery Warning Mark

Please change the batteries as soon as you see this mark.
A low battery may cause communication errors.

  • Leaving the device without replacing a battery until the LCD display goes blank will cause all recorded data in the unit to be lost.

Temperature Unit (°C or °F)

Can be changed in ThermoREC - Device Settings.

Sensor Type (TR45 only)

: Pt100
: Pt1000
: Thermocouple Sensor Type

  • Shows the type of sensor set in ThermoREC. (It does not automatically detect the connected sensor.)

Communication Status

Blinking: Communication in progress

Messages on LCD Screen

Sensor Error

This will appear when a sensor has not been connected or the wire has been broken.
Note that recording is in progress and so is battery consumption.

  • If nothing appears on display after reconnecting the sensor to the unit, there is a possibility that the sensor or the unit has been damaged.

Logging Capacity FULL

When Recording Mode has been set to "One Time" and the unit reaches its logging capacity, recording will automatically stop and [FULL] will appear in the display.
